Bolzano Calls, and the Stars Answer – Miressi joins World-Class Lineup at this weekend’s Swimmeeting South Tyrol

The wait is finally over. This weekend (Saturday 15th November and Sunday 16th November), the 29th edition of the Swimmeeting South Tyrol will bring world-class
excitement to Bolzano’s Albert-Pircher Hall. The two-day event promises fast swimming, thrilling duels, and perhaps a few record-breaking performances. Since its
debut in 1997, the meeting has welcomed many of the sport’s greatest names — and this year’s field is no exception.
Leading the lineup is American Olympic relay champion Hunter Armstrong, joined by a host of Italian and international stars ready to test themselves in the short-course
pool.
The latest big name confirmed by meet director Christian Mattivi of SSV Bozen, the long-time organizer of the event, is Alessandro Miressi. The 27-year-old from Turin,
2021 world short-course champion in the 100m freestyle, returns to Bolzano after making waves at last year’s edition. A three-time Olympic medalist (one silver, two
bronze) in relay events, Miressi is coming off a strong performance at the Nico Sapio Trophy in Genoa, where he won the 100m freestyle in 46.91.
Another standout in the men’s field is Simone Cerasuolo, reigning world long-course champion in the 50m breaststroke. The 22-year-old clocked 26.11 and 57.64 in Genoa
— both times faster than the Bolzano meeting records held by Fabio Scozzoli (26.21) and Nicolò Martinenghi (57.98). He’ll face tough competition from Federico Rizzardi, Universiade gold medalist in the 50m breast, and Finn Brooks of the United States, who
went under 26 seconds (25.97) in Genoa.

On the women’s side, Alessia Polieri, who just turned 31, comes to Bolzano fresh off her 100m butterfly win in Genoa (58.40). One of the most anticipated appearances will
be that of Mona McSharry from Ireland, who claimed bronze in the 100m breaststroke at the Paris Olympics. McSharry has shown throughout the World Cup circuit that she’s
capable of breaking the meeting records set in 2015 by American Katie Meili.
Local hopes rest on Viviane Graif (SC Meran), who placed third in Genoa with a personal best of 30.99 in the 50m breaststroke, and Anita Gastaldi, double winner in
Genoa (200m IM and 200m breaststroke) and currently in strong form.
Among the men, fans can also look forward to Nyls Krostanje of the Netherlands, sixth in the 100m butterfly at the Paris Olympics, and Leonardo Deplano, bronze medalist
with Italy’s relay team in Paris. Bolzano’s own Stefano Ballo, who began his career at Bolzano Nuoto and now trains in Bologna, returns to his home pool, while Luca
Scampicchio, the promising youngster from SSV Bozen, will compete in five events. After winning relay gold with Italy at the European Junior Championships in Slovakia last
summer, Scampicchio is aiming to reach the podium at his home meet for the first time.
Following the 2024 edition — the first since 2021 (Covid) without a single meeting record — expectations are high for a fast meet. “According to my calculations, we’ll see six
new records this year,” predicts Mattivi. “Dutch swimmer Tessa Giele is certainly capable of breaking the marks in the 50 and 100m butterfly, and the men’s breaststroke
events also promise fireworks. Krostanje is coming to Bolzano with his sights set on a record too.”
As always, spectators can catch the stars in action during the three fastest heats of each distance (50m and 100m events), scheduled for Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30
p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. A total of 585 athletes from 47 clubs and 12 countries will take part.
True to its tradition, the Swimmeeting South Tyrol will once again be held as a certified Green Event, underlining its commitment to sustainability alongside world-
class sport.
