Rare double victory and local triumph

ex-aequo meeting record and Oberhauser’s gold define the second day of the Swimmeeting
Rare double victory and local triumphThe second day of the 29th International Swimmeeting once again confirmed why this event is regarded as one of the most respected and competitive swimming meetings in Europe. Sunday delivered a blend of world-class performances, emotional local success stories and sporting moments of true rarity. One of the most remarkable highlights of the weekend unfolded in the men’s 100 m breaststroke, where Simone Cerasuolo and Federico Rizzardi touched the wall simultaneously in 57.81 seconds, breaking together the meeting record previously held by Olympic medallist Nicolò Martinenghi (2019). Such an ex-aequo meeting record is extremely rare even at major international competitions and was greeted with extended applause. Adding to the spectacle, yesterday’s double winner and two-time meeting record breaker Finn Brooks also swam under the previous record time (57.84), reinforcing the extraordinary level of this final. A truly moving moment for the local crowd came in the women’s 50 m freestyle, where South Tyrolean swimmer Hannah Oberhauser sprinted to victory in 25.45 seconds. She became the first South Tyrolean in several years to win an event at the Swimmeeting – a triumph celebrated with great enthusiasm. She was followed by Alessia Ferraguti (25.63) and Veronica Quaggio (25.75), the latter claiming her second podium finish of the weekend after her victory in the 100 m freestyle on Saturday.

The women’s 100 m butterfly once again belonged to Dutch sprinter Tessa Giele, who won in 57.64 seconds, reproducing the exact same podium order as yesterday’s 50 m butterfly: Giulia Caprai (1:00.01) and Alessia Polieri(1:00.93) followed her onto the podium. Giele then added another victory in the 50 m backstroke with 27.59, earning her four wins across the weekend. In the men’s 100 m butterfly, Dutch world championship finalist Nyls Korstanje claimed victory in 51.05 seconds, ahead of Estonia’s Daniel Zaitsev (51.71) and Italy’s Michele Busa (52.36). Bozen’s own Luca Scampicchio delivered another strong performance, finishing sixth in 53.51, marking his third top result of the weekend. Italy’s Antonio Gregucci won the men’s 50 m backstroke in 24.39, followed by Arons Roderts (24.63) and a versatile Michele Busa (24.66). In the women’s 100 m breaststroke, Irish Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry delivered another outstanding win in 1:05.25, ahead of Nika Godun (1:06.19) and Alessia Ferraguti (1:07.32). This was McSharry’s second victory of the weekend, following her triumph in the 50 m breaststroke on Saturday. The closing race, the men’s 50 m freestyle, saw Italian national team sprinter Leonardo Deplano claim victory in 21.72 seconds. Dutch swimmer Korstanje (21.93) earned his second podium of the day, while Sean Niewold (22.00) secured third place. Local favourite Luca Scampicchio received strong support once again, finishing eighth in 22.62. With the conclusion of this outstanding second day, the 29th International Swimmeeting draws to a memorable close. Preparations are already underway for the 30th anniversary edition in 2026, which promises to deliver yet another exceptional showcase of international swimming at the highest level.
